Understanding Vision Correction Surgery

Vision correction surgery alters the focusing pathway of light to precisely focus an image on the retina, resulting in clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts. At Charleston Cornea & Refractive Surgery, we expertly perform cornea-based laser vision correction (LASIK, PRK), and lens-based procedures  (EVO ICL, RLE) tailored to meet  your overall vision needs.

Our Board-Certified and Fellowship-Trained surgeons bring excellent training and years of experience using precise diagnostics, and the latest laser and lens technology to deliver safe, customized care and excellent results. Whether you’re a candidate for LASIK or need an alternative like the EVO ICL to surgically correct your vision, you’ll receive expert comprehensive evaluation and recommendations based on what procedure is best for you.

Modern Options for Vision Correction

LASIK remains one of the most popular laser vision correction surgical procedures. To perform the surgery, we use a femtosecond laser to create a partial thickness corneal flap, then a precisely aimed excimer laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue, changing the shape of the corneal surface. This allows light to focus more precisely on the retina, correcting a wide degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Most patients enjoy rapid recovery, minimal discomfort, and long-lasting results.

Alternatively, laser vision correction Surgery can be performed without making a corneal flap. Instead the surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed before reshaping the cornea with the excimer laser (PRK-Photorefractive Keratectomy). PRK is a great alternative for patients with thinner corneas or for those in contact sports or certain professions where flap-related complications may be a concern. Though recovery is slightly longer, PRK delivers the same high-quality visual outcomes as LASIK.
EVO ICL involves implanting a biocompatible lens inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens (so-called intraocular contact lens, or ICL). This option is well-suited for more nearsighted patients who are not candidates for laser procedures or who prefer a procedure that doesn’t alter the cornea. EVO ICL provides sharp, stable vision and is removable if needed, offering both flexibility and peace of mind.

Who Is a Candidate for Vision Correction Procedures?

  • You are over 18 and have a stable vision prescription for at least a year. This ensures your vision is unlikely to change significantly after surgery.
  • You are in overall good eye health with no active infections or corneal diseases. Healthy eyes are essential for proper healing and surgical success.
  • You are not pregnant or nursing, as hormone changes can affect vision stability. It’s best to wait until your vision remains consistently stable.
  • You want to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts. Vision correction can provide long-term freedom and convenience.
  • You have realistic expectations about the results and understand the recovery process. While outcomes are excellent, understanding limitations is important.
  • You are not a good candidate for LASIK but may benefit from PRK or EVO ICL. Alternatives are available for patients with specific eye characteristics.

Why Consider Vision Correction Surgery?

Uncorrected vision issues can interfere with daily tasks, limit career opportunities, and restrict the enjoyment of everyday activities. Many patients feel tied to glasses or contacts, often unaware of how much more confident and capable they could feel with clear, unaided vision.

Clear vision supports every part of life, from driving safely at night to enjoying outdoor activities, keeping up with children, or thriving in professional environments that demand precision. Patients often describe a renewed sense of independence and a boost in self-esteem after their procedures.

The earlier vision problems are addressed, the better the long-term outcomes. Delaying correction can lead to worsening prescriptions and fewer options down the road. Whether you’re aiming for visual freedom, improved quality of life, or convenience, taking action now can set you on the path to lasting clarity.

Vision correction surgery can also be a smart financial investment. Over time, the cost of glasses, contacts, prescription sunglasses, and solutions adds up. Many patients find that the upfront cost of surgery pays for itself within a few years while delivering priceless daily benefits.
